The Function of identity in techno

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Like caped crusaders, they have a mission, and they hide behind masks. No one knows who they really are. Over the past 18 months, anonymous artists have released a stream of undiluted techno music on labels that are unknown.

The music usually comes with no sleeve notes, recognisable names, or logos. The artists are completely off the grid but their message is clear – let the music speak for itself.

“Anonymous techno is created to put space between the artist and the listener,” explains Function, aka Dave Sumner, a producer who is part of the Sandwell District collective, the only label in this small and mysterious purist techno niche that barely touches the outside world.

What’s In Blake Jarrell’s DJ Box?

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Hurricane Katrina in 2005 displaced more than one million people. New Orleans kid Blake Jarrell was among the 6000 refugees who fled to the city of Chicago, to begin again.

In Windy City, he got sucked into the local dance music scene and soon found himself DJing at local parties. After a chance meeting with the world’s biggest trance DJ, Armin Van Buuren, Jarrell impressed the Armada boss with his original productions and was soon added to the Dutch label’s artist roster.

That led to a number of high profile projects, including the ‘Dancefloor Sessions’ mix CD in 2007, a 40 country world tour, a summer residency at Armada’s club night at Amnesia in Ibiza, and most recently a ‘Concentrate 2009′ double mix compilation for Armada.

Blake Jarrell is now one of the fastest rising stars in trance. His productions, which bridge the divide between progressive house and trance, have impressed a large number of A list jocks including John Digweed, who said Jarrell “is definitely someone to look out for in the future”. That’s quite a triumph for the boy whose life was once washed away by a storm.

We grabbed Blake to find out what tracks he has currently hiding in his record box.

I Dreamed A DreamThe international smash hit, I DREAMED A DREAM, has gone HOUSE & ELECTRO! Be the 1st to havean Electro Remix for your dance-floor!

Sarah Spiegel’s inspiration for doing a cover of this explosive song, believe it or not, had nothing to do with the success of Susan Boyle. It stemmed for her love of Les Miserables as a child. Sarah recorded her cover 8 months before Susan Boyle became a TV sensation. With Electronic Remixes for all formats, this release is sure to BOMB the charts!

Heard in Berlin

Monday, July 27th, 2009

Last night, a gay friend in leather trousers saved my life. It had been a shitty day. A thief stole my laptop and camera causing a gaping hole of self-pity that threatened to consume me. “Screw it, let’s get drunk and have a proper Berlin night,” he said, knowing that a dancefloor can cure life’s little problems.

By 3am, we stood outside the half completed Dice club, in an abandoned electricity station in the heart of Mitte. Three large shadows of men indicated that there was something at the end of the alleyway. Inside, rippled concrete walls enclosed a main dancefloor, empty, except for the reverberation of techno. In a back room, a hundred or so basked in pulsating LED lights that spanned the entire length of the room. We were inside a giant disco ball.
